Time’s Up: Liverpool and Newcastle Face Critical Decision on Dominik Szoboszlai as Release Clause Expires

Liverpool finds itself in a race against time as they strive to secure the signature of Dominik Szoboszlai at a reduced fee, as reported by various sources.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Liverpool held a meeting with representatives of Szoboszlai earlier this week to explore the possibility of a summer transfer.

With the contracts of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner, and Naby Keita set to expire, Liverpool is eager to bolster their midfield options during the summer transfer window.

However, Ornstein suggests that Liverpool acknowledges the challenging nature of securing a deal for Szoboszlai, stating that there is an internal acceptance within the club of the difficulties involved.

Reports indicate that the Hungarian international has a release clause worth €70 million (£60 million) embedded in his contract with RB Leipzig.

Complications arise, though, with the expiration of Szoboszlai’s release clause, reportedly set to take effect after June 30, as per German sources.

Liverpool’s Race against the Clock

Shortly after Ornstein’s initial report, Philipp Hinze, a journalist from Sky Germany, confirmed Liverpool’s concrete interest in Szoboszlai via Twitter. Hinze also mentioned that the release clause will no longer be valid after June 30.

He tweeted, “@NUFC are also still in. Open future for the Hungarian, whose release clause is €70m. But: The exit option only runs until 30 June! After that, the transfer fee is freely negotiable.”

Newcastle United has also been linked with the 22-year-old midfielder, who has caught the attention of Premier League clubs following his impressive performances for Leipzig over the past couple of years.

Szoboszlai, an attacking midfielder with versatility to operate on either flank, showcased his abilities by registering 10 goals and 13 assists in 46 appearances for the Bundesliga side last season.

Although completing the transfer poses a significant challenge for Liverpool, Szoboszlai has previously expressed his admiration for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

During an interview with Hungarian YouTube channel Csisztu in 2020, the Hungarian international spoke highly of Klopp, stating, “I really like Klopp. The kind of human being he is. The way he can inspire his players is unbelievable. Even when they have nothing, they can stand up and his players can achieve anything. For me, he is the best manager [in the world].”

Liverpool finds itself in a race against time to secure the services of Dominik Szoboszlai, with the expiration of his release clause looming. The outcome of this pursuit remains uncertain, but Liverpool and Newcastle United are vying for the talented Hungarian midfielder who has the potential to make a significant impact in the Premier League.
