Unlocking Liverpool’s Advantage: How a UEFA Loophole Grants Extra Player Selection in the Europa League
As Liverpool prepares for their first Europa League campaign in eight years following a less-than-stellar 2022/23 season, Jurgen Klopp faces a challenging decision regarding the squad composition. The disparity between UEFA and Premier League regulations has left Klopp with a puzzle to solve.
Intriguingly, two players, Ryan Gravenberch and Ben Doak, who lack homegrown status, can be registered as under-21 players for the Premier League season due to their age. However, the situation takes a different turn in Europe, where both players can only feature alongside their fellow foreign stars on the club’s List A.
This leaves Klopp with 18 players for the upcoming European campaign but only 17 available spots for registration. Consequently, third-choice goalkeeper Adrian appears to have missed out, with Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher ahead in the pecking order.
But there’s a twist in the tale, as reported by This Is Anfield. Adrian’s omission may be linked to a UEFA loophole that could still allow him to contribute in some capacity.
According to UEFA rules, if any named goalkeeper suffers a long-term injury or illness, a replacement can be drafted into the squad. This means that if Liverpool were to lose either Alisson or Kelleher, they would be able to call upon Adrian in European competition.
Interestingly, Liverpool might not even need to use this loophole if Mohamed Salah secures a move to Al Ittihad before the Saudi Pro League window closes. Reports from Sky Sports suggest that Al Ittihad is eager to make another offer for Salah, following a rejected £150 million bid last week.
However, it’s essential to note that Liverpool is unlikely to approve such a transfer. Jurgen Klopp reaffirmed his confidence in Salah’s commitment to the club, saying after a recent victory over Aston Villa, “I never had any doubts about his commitment to this club. You can’t imagine how much fuss the world has made, but how calm we are with it. He is our player, and he wants to play here.”
The Saudi Pro League window is set to close at 10 pm BST time on Thursday, adding another layer of intrigue to Liverpool’s Europa League preparations.
