Liverpool may have already identified their next manager to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Jurgen Klopp. As Klopp’s contract extends until the summer of 2026, marking an impressive 11-year tenure with the club, the question of his eventual departure naturally arises. The German’s transformative reign at Anfield has yielded Premier League and Champions League triumphs, making him a tough act to follow.

Klopp himself has hinted at the possibility of seeking a new challenge once his current contract expires, stating earlier this year, “I don’t know yet whether I’ll do something completely different after I leave Liverpool. I want to keep my options open.” Although he has been previously linked to the Germany national team job, Klopp has consistently reaffirmed his commitment to Liverpool.

When the day does come for Klopp to bid farewell to Anfield, Liverpool will need a well-thought-out succession plan in place. Remarkably, they may have already identified the ideal candidate.

Steven Gerrard, a Liverpool legend, initially seemed like a potential successor during the early days of Klopp’s tenure. His successful stint with Rangers, ending their Scottish Premiership title drought, earned him the Aston Villa role. However, struggles followed his move to Villa, and he was eventually sacked, with Unai Emery stepping in to lift the team. Gerrard’s current managerial role with Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia has significantly diminished his chances of landing the Liverpool job.

Another intriguing contender for the role is Xabi Alonso, another former Liverpool midfielder. Alonso, who graced Anfield from 2004 to 2008, holds a special place in the hearts of Liverpool supporters. He has also been honing his coaching skills as the manager of Real Sociedad’s B team. Furthermore, in October, he took the reins at Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen, where, despite a slow start, he has implemented an attacking style of football that has yielded great success.

Alonso’s achievements include guiding Bayer Leverkusen to Europa League qualification last season and a perfect start to this Bundesliga campaign with three wins in as many matches. His impressive accomplishments have not gone unnoticed, and he has been linked to top managerial roles elsewhere. However, there is speculation that Alonso may be biding his time for an opportunity with one of his former clubs, Liverpool among them.

According to Sport Bild (via Get Football News Germany), Alonso has a ‘secret agreement’ with Bayer Leverkusen that grants him the flexibility to leave the club when he sees fit. While this arrangement may not be activated for some time, Liverpool could potentially capitalize on it when the time comes to appoint a new manager.
