Virgil van Dijk Teasingly Mocks Man Utd Fan About Liverpool’s 7-0 Win Last Season
In a lighthearted exchange, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk couldn’t resist playfully ribbing a Manchester United fan about Liverpool’s memorable 7-0 victory from the previous season.
This remarkable result was one of the standout moments of the season, considering Liverpool’s relatively inconsistent form leading up to the match. The Reds had been on a four-game unbeaten run in the league without conceding goals, but their performances in 2023 had been far from convincing.
The match saw United hanging in the game for the first 40 minutes, but Cody Gakpo’s goal just before half-time shifted the momentum in Liverpool’s favor. The second half witnessed United’s defense crumbling as Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, and Darwin Nunez each found the net twice. A bizarre moment occurred when Luke Shaw’s clearance ricocheted off Roberto Firmino, allowing Salah to add to the scoreline.
Fast forward six months, and Liverpool finds itself in a strong league position, having won five of its first six matches. In contrast, United is currently in ninth place with three wins in six matches. Van Dijk couldn’t resist poking fun at a United fan while reminiscing about that unforgettable game.
During an appearance on Pro:Direct Soccer’s YouTube channel for their ‘Guess the Song’ game, Van Dijk and presenter Harry Pinero engaged in some friendly banter. With Van Dijk leading 7-6 in the scores, Pinero attempted to pump himself up for the next round. He exclaimed, “7-6, let’s go!” to which Van Dijk responded with a grin, saying, “You like seven, no? Sorry.”
Pinero took it in stride, commenting, “You lot call that shade? You like the seven, yeah? That was good, that was good. Well done.” Playfully acknowledging the unforgettable result, he added, “That was one of the worst days of my life, and you were responsible for that.”
Van Dijk, in good spirits, replied, “I tried my best.”
United fans will have to wait until December 16 for a chance at redemption when their team faces Liverpool at Anfield, hoping to end their winless streak at the ground, which stretches back to 2015 when Juan Mata scored a memorable brace, including a stunning bicycle kick in the second half.
