Awaiting Debut: Klopp’s Forgotten 2018 Signing Still Awaits Five Years Later

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has a track record of successful transfers, boasting the likes of Van Dijk, Alisson, Mane, and Salah. However, not all signings have panned out, with Naby Keita set to leave the club. Amidst both big-money and young talent signings, one player stands out – Anderson Arroyo.

In 2018, Liverpool secured Arroyo’s services from Fortaleza after his impressive performance in the U20s South American Youth Championship. Astonishingly, despite remaining at Liverpool, the 23-year-old defender is yet to make his competitive debut, enduring several loan stints.

Initially loaned to Mallorca, the center-back and right-back was later transferred to Belgian club Gent, followed by loan spells at Mlada Boleslav, Salamanca, and Mirandes. Surprisingly, Arroyo signed a contract extension until 2025 with Liverpool last summer, while simultaneously joining Alaves on loan, where he has made 22 appearances.

Arroyo’s inability to secure a work permit in England has necessitated the numerous loan moves. However, Liverpool.com suggests that a La Liga stint or breaking into the Colombia national team could provide him with the work permit he needs.

Therefore, Liverpool will undoubtedly be supporting Alaves in their crucial playoff final against Levante as they hope for Arroyo’s breakthrough and potential eligibility to play for the Reds in the future.
