Curtis Jones shed light on his engaging post-match conversation with Jurgen Klopp following his exceptional performance as he earned the Man of the Match title in Liverpool’s impressive 5-1 triumph over West Ham in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.
At Anfield, Jones netted two goals, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo also found the back of the net, with Mo Salah contributing to the scoreline.
The victory paved the way for a semi-final clash against Fulham, where Jones emerged as the standout performer of the match.
In a post-match interview, Gakpo, who was also on the scoresheet, presented Jones with the Player of the Match award and expressed heartfelt words of admiration, marking a touching moment between the two players.
However, the spotlight also fell on an exchange between Jones and Klopp on the pitch after the game. Their animated discussion involved gestures, as Jones seemed to clarify a particular action during the match.
Speaking to Sky Sports during an interview, Jones divulged the specifics of his conversation with Klopp, stating, “During the first half, there was a moment when Darwin [Nunez] had possession, and I could have made a forward run.”
“It was during a throw-in. I expressed my intention to manage the game, avoiding receiving the ball and potentially losing possession in an attacking move, which unfortunately led to their goal.”
“It’s part of the game. No issues.”
Jones has been associated with Liverpool since the age of nine and made his debut in January 2019 during the FA Cup match against Wolves.
Following several midfield departures over the summer, he has noticeably elevated his performance this season, drawing praise from Klopp for his recent stellar display.
Klopp, who expressed disappointment with the lack of atmosphere from the home crowd, commended Jones for his “exceptional freshness” and highlighted his “remarkable acceleration with the ball.”
Reflecting on Jones’s performance, Klopp added, “He surpassed expectations by integrating ball acceleration into his game, a crucial aspect. Not every opponent allows for such play, but against certain teams, you must penetrate the first line with the ball.”
“His second goal was an incredible feat, driving towards the penalty spot from where he scored, a rather uncommon sight, but a significant achievement for him. Overall, it was an outstanding performance.”
“His evident freshness isn’t surprising, given that he hasn’t clocked numerous minutes in recent weeks. His overall display was impressive.”
