Exceptional Liverpool Player Overcomes Initial Challenges, Achieves Remarkable Statistic, Only Outranked by Haaland
According to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth, Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez was not only signed as a player for the future but also expected to make an impact this season. The young attacker has faced scrutiny since his move to Anfield, but adapting to a new league is never easy.
Nunez, who is earning £140k-a-week, joined Liverpool at the beginning of the season for a club-record fee of £85m, as reported by Sky Sports. Unfortunately, the hefty price tag brings high expectations, making it challenging for a young player to adjust to a new country, culture, and style of football in just a few months.
Liverpool’s underwhelming season has added additional pressure on Nunez to perform. However, the arrival of Cody Gakpo in the January transfer window has somewhat alleviated the burden. Despite not reaching the expected level, Jurgen Klopp believes that Nunez would have scored more goals if the team had performed better this campaign.
“He needed time to settle. The most difficult thing for a striker is to come into a team that is not clicking. For him to have scored 15 goals anyway, imagine if by our standards, a good season with 70 or 80 points, he would have scored 20-odd goals definitely,” Klopp stated.
Sheth emphasized that Nunez was not solely signed for immediate impact but also for his potential as a player for the future. When asked if Nunez might need a year to adapt to the Premier League, Sheth responded, “I think exactly that. We’ve got to understand we immediately expect players who come from another country and another league to immediately hit the ground running. Not everybody can do what Erling Haaland has done. I think he’s just unique. With Nunez, I think Liverpool knew they were buying a player who could have an impact this season, but also a player of potential as well.”
Assessing Nunez’s performance this season, it is worth noting that only Erling Haaland has missed more big chances in the Premier League. Improving his finishing is undoubtedly an area Nunez will be eager to work on. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that Haaland, despite missing several opportunities, has also displayed an extraordinary ability to find the back of the net on an unprecedented scale.
