Former Liverpool Star’s Eagerness to Return: He Pleaded with Steven Gerrard to Intercede with the Manager
Michael Owen’s Candid Admission: Desperation to Return to Liverpool and Managerial Appeals through Gerrard and Carragher
Michael Owen, the former Liverpool prodigy, recently revealed his longing desire to make a comeback to Anfield. Owen, who emerged from Liverpool’s youth system and made his senior debut in 1996, enjoyed a prolific spell with 297 appearances and 158 goals across various competitions.
In 2004, Owen departed for Real Madrid in La Liga before returning to the Premier League with Newcastle United. However, his subsequent move to Liverpool’s arch-rivals, Manchester United, slightly tarnished his standing among Liverpool supporters.
Speaking to BoyleSports, Owen acknowledged his eagerness to rejoin Liverpool and confessed that he implored Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher to intervene with then-manager Rafael Benitez on his behalf.
Despite facing occasional criticism for his stint at Manchester United, Owen defended his decision, emphasizing that he would have eagerly returned to Liverpool from Newcastle. He recounted conversations with Gerrard and Carragher, expressing his desire to reunite with his beloved team, albeit the managerial direction led Liverpool to sign Fernando Torres and later Luis Suarez.
Owen reflected on the complexity of his footballing career and the necessity to maintain performance levels. He underscored that among the available options after leaving Newcastle, Manchester United stood as the most appealing choice.
During his tenure with Manchester United, Owen notably scored 17 goals in 52 appearances, including a memorable winner in a 4-3 victory over local rivals Manchester City in 2009.
