Inside Jurgen Klopp’s Unconventional Penalty Protocol Unveiled by Ex-Liverpool Player
The stringent disciplinary structure within Liverpool, masterminded by Jurgen Klopp, has been unveiled by former player James Milner, shedding light on an intriguing system that governed the club during his tenure.
Milner, an integral part of Liverpool for eight remarkable seasons, culminating in his departure last summer, made significant contributions to the team’s success. Throughout his illustrious spell, which saw him feature in 332 matches and secure both the Premier League and Champions League titles, he not only served as a seasoned midfielder but also assumed leadership roles within Klopp’s team.
Within the Liverpool dressing room, Milner not only wore the captain’s armband but also held the responsibility of meting out fines to players who contravened the team’s regulations. Speaking candidly on the High Performance podcast, he delved into the intricate details of Klopp’s meticulous yet unusual fine system, which prominently featured a conspicuously large inflatable dice.
“We had a structured system of fines that involved a court-like setup. The centerpiece was this sizable inflatable dice,” Milner revealed. “Whenever someone erred, whether tardiness or inappropriate attire like flip flops in the gym with a reasonable explanation, we convened a randomly selected jury. I often found myself presiding over the court, presenting arguments for or against imposing fines.”
Milner recounted how the outcome of the fine was determined by the roll of the dice, offering players various possibilities: pay the stipulated fine, incur a doubled penalty, escape the sanction entirely, or undertake a peculiar challenge to waive the penalty. He amusingly recounted an instance involving Roberto Firmino, who undertook a bizarre task during his time at Liverpool to evade paying a fine.
“The options presented by the dice ranged from paying the fine to undertaking diverse tasks. In one instance, Bobby Firmino had to balance on a Swiss ball and attempt to toss a tennis ball into a foam roller within three tries. Succeeding in this peculiar task spared him from paying the fine,” Milner chuckled.
The 37-year-old praised Klopp’s unconventional methods, emphasizing their role in fostering unity within the dressing room. “These unique practices contributed to team cohesion,” Milner remarked, highlighting how these idiosyncratic approaches created camaraderie among the players.
