International Teammates Clash Online Over Tottenham’s Controversial Win Against Liverpool
Liverpool faced a heartbreaking late defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur in a contentious Premier League showdown, igniting a heated online exchange between two international teammates, as they referenced the match’s refereeing performance.
Curtis Jones received a red card just 26 minutes into the game for a foul on Yves Bissouma, with VAR intervention confirming the decision – the first of several contentious decisions in the match.
Shortly after being reduced to 10 men, Liverpool believed they had taken the lead when Luis Diaz scored, only to have it disallowed for offside by the linesman, with VAR inexplicably uninvolved.
However, the PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) subsequently acknowledged that Diaz was onside, and the goal should have been allowed.
Spurs capitalized on the confusion, with Son Heung-min scoring after Diaz’s goal was disallowed. Liverpool managed to equalize in first-half stoppage time through Cody Gakpo’s skillful finish on the turn.
Jurgen Klopp’s side faced further adversity when Diogo Jota received two quick yellow cards with around 20 minutes remaining, reducing Liverpool to nine men.
The match appeared headed for a draw until deep into injury time when Liverpool defender Joel Matip accidentally turned Pedro Porro’s cross into his own net, giving Spurs a 2-1 victory.
Spurs defender Cristian Romero celebrated the dramatic win on Instagram, praising his teammates’ spirit, saying, “This team has great spirit, great heart. always like this, all together.”
However, Liverpool midfielder and Romero’s fellow Argentina international teammate, Alexis Mac Allister, couldn’t resist commenting on the refereeing in the game. In a now-deleted comment, Mac Allister wrote in Spanish, ‘normal cuando jugas con 12,’ which translates to ‘normal when you play with 12.’
Romero offered a curt response, simply saying ‘a llorar a casa,’ which means ‘go cry at home.’
The next Argentina squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru later this month is yet to be announced, but it seems a frosty reunion may be in store for the duo, if selected, based on their exchange.
