Jurgen Klopp Urges Rematch for Tottenham vs Liverpool Due to Luis Diaz VAR Controversy

In the wake of the contentious VAR audio release pertaining to Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal, Jurgen Klopp has finally broken his silence on the matter. Diaz found himself at the center of controversy during Liverpool’s recent 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur when his goal was erroneously disallowed for offside.

The incident drew sharp criticism directed at both the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and the VAR system for their handling of the situation. On Tuesday evening, the VAR audio, which captured the crucial moments of the match, was made public for the first time.

Klopp, speaking ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming Europa League clash against Union Saint-Gilloise, shared his thoughts on the audio recording. He emphasized, “The audio did not alter the situation for me. I was not interested in the events leading up to the outcome; we scored, and it didn’t count.”

The Liverpool manager stressed the importance of handling the situation appropriately, acknowledging that the referees, linesmen, and VAR officials did not make the mistake intentionally. He recognized that an obvious error had occurred and suggested potential solutions.

“As the manager of Liverpool, I advocate for a rematch. The counterargument is that everyone will now demand the same, but this is an exceptional circumstance. However, I don’t believe it will come to fruition,” Klopp asserted. “In my opinion, a rematch would be the right course of action, or the referees could convene the two managers at the time of the incident. The only challenge is that Spurs subsequently scored, but that’s my perspective. To the best of my recollection, such an occurrence is unprecedented, which is why I believe a rematch should be considered.”

Klopp also weighed in on VAR in general, expressing his concerns about the current terminology, “clear and obvious,” and its inadequacy. He highlighted the need for finding solutions to prevent such mistakes in the future, stressing the importance of allowing officials the necessary time to make accurate decisions.

“The problems are evident, but they are resolvable. We should strive to create an environment where officials can make the best possible decisions,” Klopp concluded, addressing the broader issues surrounding VAR and its impact on the game.
