Jurgen Klopp’s Gentle Appeal: Liverpool Fans Encouraged to Silence Iconic Chant
Liverpool’s charismatic manager, Jurgen Klopp, has reiterated his stance on a beloved fan chant, urging the Reds’ faithful to channel their enthusiasm onto the pitch during matches. Last month, Klopp made headlines when he was perceived as expressing frustration with the famous chant titled ‘I’m so Glad (That Jurgen is a Red),’ which is sung to the tune of The Beatles’ classic ‘I Feel Fine.’ The lyrics celebrate Klopp’s impact, with lines like “I’m so glad that Jurgen is a Red. I’m so glad he delivered what he said.”
In a video posted on social media, Klopp was caught passionately imploring the Anfield crowd to “stop singing that s***” during Liverpool’s 3-1 victory over Bournemouth. This outburst followed his earlier plea for fans to hold off on the song until the final whistle.
Now, as Liverpool prepares to face Aston Villa at Anfield on Sunday, Klopp has revisited the subject in his program notes. He expressed deep appreciation for the song, describing it as a special honor beyond his wildest imagination when he took on the role of Liverpool manager.
Nonetheless, Klopp has emphasized his desire for a change in when the song is sung. He wrote, “Just thinking about it gives me goosebumps. The only exception I make – and it is much easier and much better to do it in these notes than it is in the heat of a game – is that I would love it if it became a song for after matches are finished. During games, I want all of the support to go to the players. I want them to feel your backing and I want you to urge them on and keep them on their toes.”
Klopp concluded his statement by expressing gratitude for the unwavering support of Liverpool fans and expressed hope that the players could receive the same level of encouragement. He acknowledged that it’s not his place to dictate when fans should sing which songs, describing his request as a “polite request.”
Liverpool enters the upcoming match against Aston Villa on the back of a thrilling 2-1 victory over Newcastle United last weekend. The team has had a strong start to the season, currently sitting in fifth place in the Premier League table with two wins and a 1-1 draw against Chelsea. Klopp’s focus remains on harnessing the power of Anfield to propel his team to success on the pitch.
