Liverpool eyeing shock move: Kyle Walker to unlock Trent Alexander-Arnold’s new role
Rumors suggest that Liverpool is considering a surprising transfer move that could enable Trent Alexander-Arnold to embrace a new position in international club football.
Alexander-Arnold, 24, showcased his midfield prowess once again during England’s dominant 7-0 victory over North Macedonia in their Euro 2024 qualifier at Old Trafford on Monday.
In consecutive games, England manager Gareth Southgate deployed Alexander-Arnold in a midfield trio alongside Declan Rice and Liverpool teammate Jordan Henderson. This midfield combination also started in the 4-0 triumph over Malta last week.
Although Alexander-Arnold excelled in an inverted full-back role towards the end of the previous season, Jurgen Klopp has yet to consistently field him as a dedicated midfielder.
However, reports suggest that Liverpool is planning a surprising signing that could facilitate Alexander-Arnold’s permanent transition into midfield next season.
According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool has been linked with a potential summer move for England international Kyle Walker, who currently plays for Manchester City.
At 33 years old, Walker is entering the final year of his contract with City and has been the subject of transfer speculation.
As a more traditional right-back compared to Alexander-Arnold, Walker could potentially replace the Liverpool defender in the back four, paving the way for the younger England international to make a midfield switch.
The feasibility of Liverpool securing Walker’s services remains uncertain. Klopp may hesitate to alter Alexander-Arnold’s current role, considering the success he experienced as an inverted full-back in the latter stages of the previous campaign.
Moreover, City might be hesitant to sell Walker to a direct rival, given the achievements of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko at Arsenal.
The Daily Mail reports that Walker is eager to continue his tenure at City, and the club has initiated negotiations regarding a contract extension for the former Tottenham defender.
“While Bayern Munich has been linked with a £15m move for the 33-year-old, it is understood that Walker would prefer to extend his stay at City if possible,” the report added.
