Liverpool Plummets to 19th Place in Premier League’s ‘Net Owner Funding’ Rankings
Liverpool Football Club, under the ownership of American businessman John W Henry’s Fenway Sports Group (FSG), has found itself in the 19th position among the 20 Premier League teams in terms of net owner funding. Despite FSG’s success in leading Liverpool to victory in major competitions, such as capturing every major trophy available, fans have voiced their concerns about the lack of investment in recent years.
While Liverpool has made significant acquisitions, including the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Darwin Nunez, and Alisson, supporters at Anfield are eager for more substantial investment. A recent report from The Athletic has shed light on Liverpool’s position in net owner funding within the Premier League.
Net owner funding refers to the total amount of money invested in the club by the owners, subtracted by any dividends withdrawn. Over the past five years, FSG’s net owner funding stands at a negative £37 million. In contrast, Manchester City’s owners have injected £81 million into the club, with their investment growing significantly over the past decade.
The report also explores the transfer spending of various clubs over the same five-year period. Liverpool’s total expenditure amounts to £660 million, which still falls short of Manchester City’s staggering £992 million. Meanwhile, Manchester United has spent £850 million, and Arsenal’s total stands at £676 million.
Upon discovering these findings, Liverpool fans wasted no time expressing their reactions on social media. Some fans praised manager Jurgen Klopp, attributing the team’s success to his tactical prowess. Others called for FSG to sell the club to owners who would provide sufficient funds for Liverpool to compete against state-owned clubs and the likes of Chelsea.
Criticism of FSG’s approach was evident, with fans considering it “pathetic” that Klopp has had to work with limited resources despite Liverpool’s high profitability in recent years. The report has left supporters disheartened, fueling concerns for the upcoming summer transfer window.
As Liverpool enters a crucial phase in their pursuit of returning to the top of English football, they have already secured the signing of Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. The club has also been linked with potential moves for players like Manu Kone, Nicolo Barella, Khephren Thuram, and Gabri Veiga as they aim to reinforce their squad.
