Liverpool Seeks Alternative Venue in England for a Unique ‘Home Game’ Experience Away from Anfield

Liverpool Football Club is seeking a distinctive approach to their pre-season preparations ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season. With ongoing construction work at Anfield, the club aims to stage a ‘home’ friendly away from their legendary stadium.

The iconic Anfield is currently undergoing an £80 million expansion project over the summer, which includes the addition of 7,000 extra seats at the Anfield Road stand. Consequently, Liverpool has already made a request to play their first game of the upcoming season away from home.

According to reports from the Daily Mail, manager Jurgen Klopp is keen on a warm-up match before the new campaign kicks off, specifically targeting Monday, August 7 for the fixture. The club is eyeing Preston North End’s Deepdale ground as a potential venue for the game.

In an interesting turn of events, Preston has also requested permission to play their opening game of the season away from home. The Championship season begins two days before Liverpool’s proposed friendly, and Preston aims to avoid a scheduling conflict that would force them to play three matches in just four days on their home turf, particularly if drawn for a home game in the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool and Preston enjoy a strong relationship, with the Lancashire-based club set to benefit financially from hosting the fixture at their 23,000-capacity home ground. Deepdale even boasts a stand named after the legendary Bill Shankly, who spent 16 years at Preston before his iconic tenure with Liverpool.

While Liverpool’s current pre-season plans include a trip to Germany for two matches, followed by fixtures in Singapore against Leicester City and Bayern Munich, they are determined to secure a ‘home’ game experience before the new season commences. Deepdale seems poised to become the stage for this unique clash, although the opponent for the proposed match has yet to be finalized, with the participation of an overseas team appearing unlikely.
