Liverpool Supporters Outraged After VAR Decision Overlooks ‘Clear-Cut’ Penalty Claim Against Arsenal
Liverpool supporters expressed their frustration across social media channels following a pivotal moment in their clash against Arsenal led by Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
The high-stakes encounter between these title contenders unfolded on a Saturday night, where the table-topping Arsenal aimed for a rare triumph at Anfield.
Klopp rallied the home crowd to generate an electric atmosphere, yet hopes were dampened within three minutes as Gabriel Magalhaes nodded in the visitors’ opener, approved after a VAR review for potential offside.
Eager to respond swiftly, Liverpool sought a penalty for a handball incident. Referee Chris Kavanagh waved off their appeals despite clear footage indicating Martin Odegaard’s contact with the ball. VAR’s decision upheld Kavanagh’s original ruling, prompting former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher to assert that the penalty should have been granted.

“I firmly believe it was a penalty for Liverpool. Odegaard was extremely lucky,” Carragher expressed on Sky Sports. “When the referee doesn’t award it, VAR is unlikely to reverse the call.”
Liverpudlian fans took to social media platforms to vent their outrage over the contentious decision.
“Absolute handball. Undeniable penalty. Refusing to even review it?!,” lamented a supporter on X.
Another commented, “Absolutely a penalty for Liverpool! Odegaard dribbled that ball like he was in a basketball game.”
A third fan remarked, “Odegaard went full-on LeBron. How on earth is this not a penalty?”
Nevertheless, Liverpool managed to level the score before halftime. Mohamed Salah breezed past Oleksandr Zinchenko on the right flank, delivering a blistering strike beyond David Raya in Arsenal’s net.
The intensity of the match escalated when Kostas Tsimikas collided with his own manager, Jurgen Klopp, forcing Tsimikas to exit the pitch. The first half culminated with the scoreline locked at 1-1.
