Revitalizing Liverpool’s Mbappe dream: Exploring the potential of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho departures
Liverpool finds itself in the midst of significant changes this summer, as the club enters a phase of uncertainty and transformation.
Following a disappointing fifth-place finish in the previous Premier League season, Jurgen Klopp is determined to rebuild the squad, aiming to ensure last season’s setback was merely a temporary setback rather than the start of a downward spiral.
The departures of James Milner, Roberto Firmino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita on free transfers highlight the club’s intent to revamp the team. On the other hand, Liverpool has made key acquisitions, securing the services of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai.
The midfield lineup at Liverpool could undergo a complete overhaul for the upcoming season, with rumors circulating about the potential summer moves of club captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to the Saudi Pro League. Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, currently managing Al Ettifaq, is keen on signing Henderson, while Al Ittihad is reportedly preparing a £40m bid for Fabinho.
Considering all the summer departures, including loanee Arthur Melo, Liverpool is estimated to have slashed more than £900,000 off its weekly wage bill, according to figures from Spotrac. Mac Allister, who recently signed a five-year deal with the club, is believed to earn around £150,000 per week, while Szoboszlai’s five-year contract sees him earning slightly less at approximately £125,000 per week.
This substantial reduction in the wage bill leaves Liverpool with a surplus of over £600,000 per week, potentially providing the financial flexibility to attract top-tier talent to Anfield.
One player who has long been linked with Liverpool is Paris Saint-Germain sensation Kylian Mbappe, who has previously admitted to holding talks with the club earlier in his career. With just one year left on his contract at Parc des Princes, Mbappe is reportedly willing to let it run down, even if it means being benched by his current club.
It is widely speculated that Mbappe is destined for Real Madrid, either through a significant transfer fee this summer or as a free agent next year. However, if Madrid chooses to wait, it could present Liverpool with a golden opportunity to launch an audacious bid for the French forward.
By that time, Liverpool may have regained their place in the Champions League and be prepared to break their wage structure to entice Mbappe to Anfield, leveraging the financial resources saved during this summer’s squad restructuring.
Nonetheless, it remains uncertain whether Mbappe would entertain a move to England, even if Liverpool can offer Champions League football. Additionally, Liverpool might be hesitant to match the exorbitant wages reportedly earned by Mbappe at PSG, with talkSPORT suggesting he receives a minimum of £650,000 per week.
However, if Mbappe remains in Ligue 1 for another season, Liverpool will position themselves to challenge for his signature next summer, hoping to be in a stronger position to lure the coveted French superstar to Anfield.
