Steven Gerrard’s Candid Admission: His Top Liverpool Regret and a Candid Jab at a Former Manager

Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard has opened up about one of his biggest regrets in his illustrious career, shedding light on the pivotal decision he made in 2015 that saw him leave Anfield and head to the MLS with LA Galaxy. In a revealing interview, Gerrard didn’t shy away from aiming a pointed dig at his former manager, Brendan Rodgers.

Back in 2015, Gerrard had a one-year contract extension on the table at Liverpool, but he ultimately chose to opt for a move to the MLS. The catalyst for his decision? Brendan Rodgers, who was at the helm of the Reds at the time, had indicated that Gerrard’s playing time would diminish in the upcoming season.

In hindsight, Gerrard, now 43, expressed his regret about not staying at Liverpool to work alongside Jurgen Klopp, who succeeded Rodgers shortly after Gerrard’s departure in October 2015. In a video shared by The Anfield Wrap on TikTok, Gerrard revealed his sentiments.

“I was devastated. I obviously made a decision not to sign a year extension to go to America, whereas if I’d taken the extension, I might have gotten six months under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp,” Gerrard admitted.

He continued, “But obviously being under Brendan’s management at the time, I was getting told my game time was gonna get less and less. I didn’t wanna be a sub for Liverpool, I didn’t wanna be a squad player. I still felt that I was the best midfielder there at the time.”

Gerrard’s decision to leave Liverpool marked the end of an era, as he had played over 700 games in all competitions for the club, scoring 185 goals, and solidifying his status as a Liverpool legend.

Today, Gerrard manages Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq, and his perspective on player decisions and game time is reflected in his recent acquisition of Jordan Henderson from Liverpool. Henderson, too, opted to leave the Reds when faced with a similar scenario, underlining the complex dynamics that exist in the world of football decision-making.
