Liverpool’s Curtis Jones and PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo recently indulged in some light-hearted mockery directed at Everton’s goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, recalling his infamous errors in clashes against Liverpool.

The banter harked back to January 2018 when Liverpool faced Everton in an FA Cup third-round encounter at Anfield. James Milner put Liverpool in the lead before Everton equalized in the second half. However, it was Virgil van Dijk, making his Liverpool debut, who sealed the win with a header, outmaneuvering Pickford in goal.

In a social media video, Jones and Gakpo reacted to Van Dijk’s goal, with Jones questioning the goalkeeper’s actions, echoing the sentiments of many football fans who witnessed the moment.

Pickford’s woes against Liverpool continued in subsequent encounters. In December 2018, during added time, Pickford’s error allowed Divock Origi to score the decisive goal, sealing a 1-0 victory for Liverpool.

The rivalry between the two Merseyside clubs intensified further in 2020 when Pickford’s reckless challenge on Van Dijk resulted in a season-ending ACL injury for the Dutch defender. Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum criticized the nature of Everton’s challenges in these encounters, labeling Pickford’s tackle as “completely stupid” and expressing dismay over the physicality displayed by Everton players during the derby matches.
