Jurgen Klopp’s Most Costly Liverpool Acquisition Loses £40 Million in Value Over Five Years
Former Liverpool’s club-record signing, Naby Keita, finds himself in a striking reversal of fortune, with his current market value plummeting by nearly £40 million compared to the lofty sum the Reds invested in his services half a decade ago.
The Guinea international bid adieu to Liverpool after a rather checkered tenure at Anfield, opting to leave the club as his contract reached its conclusion during the summer transfer window.
Keita’s journey with the Reds, which commenced with great promise, was marred by persistent injury setbacks. Liverpool had initially committed a substantial £47 million in transfer fees to secure his signature from RB Leipzig in 2018.
Heralded as one of Jurgen Klopp’s early marquee acquisitions, lofty expectations surrounded Keita as he arrived at the club, having contributed to 26 Bundesliga goals during his two seasons with Leipzig.
Despite occasional flashes of brilliance, a combination of injuries and inconsistent form thwarted Keita from fully realizing his potential in Liverpool’s midfield. Nonetheless, he did manage to hoist both the Premier League and Champions League trophies during his time at the club.
Keita’s final appearance in Liverpool’s colors took place in a lackluster 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace in February, a match that saw the 28-year-old midfielder substituted at half-time. Tragically, his Liverpool tenure concluded abruptly as he was sidelined by a season-ending injury.
In preparation for the current season, Keita made a move to the Bundesliga, joining Werder Bremen. However, his stint with the German outfit got off to an inauspicious start as he suffered an injury during pre-season warm-up.
Regrettably, injury woes have continued to plague the talented midfielder. Nevertheless, he recently made a return to the pitch, featuring in Bremen’s last three matches.
This string of unavailability in recent seasons has taken a significant toll on Keita’s market value. As per Transfermarkt, Keita’s current value stands at a mere €9 million (£7.8 million), representing an astounding drop of nearly £40 million from the sum Liverpool initially paid for his services.
In a recent interview with GiveMeSport, Paul Machin, the presenter of Redmen TV, candidly labeled Naby Keita as ‘the biggest disappointment of the Klopp era’ at Anfield.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s evident that, despite his undeniable talent, Keita’s journey at Liverpool did not culminate as expected, leaving behind a legacy of untapped potential and persistent injury woes.
