Jamie Carragher slammed Liverpool players performance against Real Madrid
Jamie Carragher ruthlessly slammed his former club for their “embarrassing” second-half collapse against reigning champions Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday evening.
Spanish giants produced a sensational comeback against Liverpool to take control of their round-of-16 UCL tie.
The Merseyside Reds took a 2-0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes thanks to Salah and Nunez, however, Vinicius Jr leveled in the first half.
Karim Benzema’s brace and Eder Militao’s bullet header in the second half sealed an emphatic 5-2 comeback victory for the Los Blancos in their first-leg clash against Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The Reds face a monstrous uphill task to keep their place in the most elite tournament in Europe, with the Reds travelling to the Santiago Bernabeu for the return leg on 15th March.
Speaking after the game steamrolling of Liverpool, Carragher pulled no punches towards Reds blasted their’ “shambolic” performance.
The Sky Sports pundit branded the Reds second-half performance a “disgrace” and was baffled by their’ lack of real fight after conceding to Madrid.
“[…] Listen, first of all, I must say, I mean, what a performance by Real Madrid to come to Anfield and do that,” Carragher said on CBS Sports.
“I’ve never seen a team come to Anfield on a European night like that. I can remember I was involved in that.
“I’ve seen it perform like that and destroyed Liverpool like that. But that was shambolic from Liverpool. Embarrassing.
“We made excuses for them all season, the reasons why they’re not doing as well as they have done in previous seasons.
“But that was a disgrace that second half… to not even have any chance themselves, show any real fight after the goals go in and to lose that second half 3-0.
“You’re attacking the Kop, it’s 2-2, knockout game. As I said, absolutely shambolic from Liverpool.
“And that’s what I’m talking about in terms of being shambolic. I’m talking about defensively shambolic all season.”
